Health education is done so that the patient is more at comfort while the treatment is in progress as the patient is well aware of the various facts with respect to the treatment procedures and possible complications, if any for a particular treatment procedure.
Diagnosis
Oral diagnosis and Radiology is a speciality of dentistry designed to study the patients’ dental history correlating it with his/her medical history and an in detail clinical examination of the oral tissues and structures supported by radiographs to assess the oral health status of the patient with an objective of developing a perfect treatment plan.
At Dental Hospital, the department of oral diagnosis focuses on multidisciplinary approach. All patients coming to our hospital are first directed by our front office staff to the department of oral diagnosis where the patients’ complaint is first recorded which is followed by an in detail dental and medical history and a thorough examination of the oral cavity. The members of this department work along with the members of other specialities to prepare a definite diagnostic plan like a team to produce a truly interdisciplinary patient centered approach, so that from the simplest treatment procedures to the most complex ones, every patient in a team effort. Depending on the depth and complexity of the disease, team Mohan Dental Clinic reviews it from all points of view. The Oral Diagnosis department at Mohan Dental Clinic also concentrates on oral mucosal diseases, potentially malignant conditions such as OSMF, leukoplakia, erythropkakia, lichen planus etc., orofacial pain disorders, saliva problems like xerostomia and oral complaints that may reflect either local oral disease or oral manifestation of systemic diseases. Potentially malignant condition like oral submucous fibrosis, leukoplakia, erythroplakia, lichen planus, discoid lupus erythematosus are commonly seen in Indian subcontinental region. These conditions carry an increased risk of malignant transformation and are present as grey, white or red patches in the oral cavity. Such conditions are usually not noticeable by individuals as they do not have any associated symptoms in their initial stages. The department of oral diagnosis is actually involved in the awareness and treatment of such conditions.
Various diagnostic tools are used in the diagnosis of oral diseases:
DIAGNODENT – ACCURATE, RELIABLE CARIES DETECTION AID
The DIAGNOdent pen is a hand-held laser caries detection aid that provides the same high detection accuracy as the DIAGNOdent.
It’s an ideal aid to confirm the precise location of the lesion prior to restorative incipient caries treatment .
The DIAGNOdent hand-held caries detection operates at a wavelength of 655 nm. At this specific wavelength, clean healthy tooth structure exhibits little or no fluorescence, resulting in very low scale readings on the display. However, carious tooth structure will exhibit fluorescence, proportionate to the degree of caries, resulting in elevated scale readings on the display of the DIAGNOdent, enabling our diagnostic team to provide a more accurate dental caries treatment plan.
HALIMETER
Bad breath, also called halitosis, can be an embarrassing problem. It can be caused by the foods one eats, dry mouth, tobaccoproducts, or a medical disorder. Maintaining proper oral health can help reduce or eliminate bad breath.
Research has indicated that hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan, other thiols, and dimethyl sulfide, collectively referred to as volatile sulfur compounds (VSC), are the principal malodorants in chronic halitosis. These compounds are generated by anaerobic bacteria in the oral cavity.
A halimeter is a small machine that is used to take a reading of your breath. You will blow into a special tube and the machine will indicate the enzymes and chemicals that are in your breath. You then keep using the halimeter regularly at our hospital to monitor the levels of these enzymes and chemicals while continuing with measures to remedy the problem.
PULP TESTER
An electric pulp test ascertains the vitality of a tooth. Dental pulp tests are investigations that provide valuable diagnostic and treatment planning information to our dentists . If a pathosis is present, pulp testing combined with information taken from the history, examination, and other investigations such as radiographs leads to the diagnosis of the underlying disease.
No response from a tooth generally indicates pulpal necrosis or dental abscess, which suggests root canal therapy or dental extraction. A very quick response compared to the adjacent teeth generally indicates pulpitis and presages pulp death.
VISILITE
Oral cancer is one of the most treatable and curable cancers when caught early. The VisiLite® examination lets our Oral Diagnosis team check your mouth for abnormalities. The smallest unusual cell growth is detected, and can result in immediate treatment protocol to stop the cells before they grow into larger tumors.
BIOPSY
A biopsy is a simple surgery to remove a sample of soft tissue or bone. It is done when the Oral Diagnosis team wants to have the sample examined in a laboratory. The purpose is to find out the nature of an abnormality which may be caused by an illness or an injury. The lesion may be an area of soft tissue or bone that appears unusual or diseased. It could be a new bump, or a patch of skin that has changed color or texture.
There are two types of biopsy: incisional and excisional. An incisional biopsy removes a piece of tissue from a lesion. It is a sampling. An excisional biopsy removes the entire lesion. In both cases, the tissue is sent to a laboratory. Types of biopsies perfomed by our Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons include:
- Excisional biopsy
- Incisional biopsy
- Brush biopsy
- Punch biopsy
Dental Hospital is the right place if any individual sights a growth, ulcer or patche in his oral cavity as we have the true specialist team to treat and resolve such cases and conditions in their initial stages.
